One day after the ruling party’s landslide victory in the 21st general election, the ruling party is  calling to abolish the National Security Act. In addition, the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK, Deobureo Minjoo Party) floor leader Lee In-young (이인영)’s “state ownership of land concept” is resurfacing.  Because of this, there was concern that the socialist constitutional amendment will become a reality.

Woo Hee-jong (Deobureo Simin Party), Lee Hae-chan (Deobureo Minjoo Party), Choi Bae-geun (Deobureo Simin Party)

Woo Hee-jong (우희종), the leader of Deobureo Simin Dang (Together Citizens’ Party), which is the DPK’s proportional representatives-only party, posted about abolishing the National Security Act on his Facebook on the 16th.  Woo stated “(People’s support) reminded us of the constitutional amendment discussions in the early stages of the current administration,” and also wrote, “Is it possible to eliminate the National Security Act?”

The constitutional amendment in 2018 was promoted during the early stage of the President Moon Jae-in administration, but it collapsed due to resistance from the main opposition party.  In this general election, however, the DPK and the Together Citizens’ Party [essentially one party] won 180 seats, and with the [closely aligned] political parties, such as the Justice Party (6 seats) and the Open Democratic Party (3 seats), they approach 190 seats.  As a result, the changes to the constitution are again discussed. This is because a constitution can be changed, if only 10 members of the opposition parties participate.

A concerned Unified Future Party lawmaker stated, “In reality, this means they want to amend the constitution toward socialism, and the opposition parties must fight together to stop it.”

Meanwhile, Together Citizens’ Party leader Woo also made Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol a topic of criticism.  Woo threatened Yoon by saying, “The candlelight citizens who gathered in Seocho-dong [Seoul in October 2019 in support of Cho Kuk, former Blue House official mired in various scandals], after all, are now asking for your position [whether Yoon will continue to investigate Cho Kuk as well as other Blue House officials involved in election fraud, etc.]  in Yeouido [National Assembly].”
