A Petition to President Moon Jae-in to Free President Park Geun-hye by Save Korea Alliance International

To President Moon Jae-in,
Overseas Koreans, including those in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Germany, live with infinite pride in the fact that South Korea overcame the terrible scars of war and generational poverty, went through industrialization and democratization, and finally entered the world’s top tier economies.
We also are very proud of having a woman president that even advanced democracies, such as Japan and the United States have not had. Unfortunately, when we see this female president, who has been the source of this pride, politically impeached and judicially judged, and she has been languishing in prison for nearly five years, our self-esteem not only fell, but we feel heart-rending pain and sadness for her.
Dear President Moon.
At this point, we do not want to focus on whether the impeachment and judicial actions against President Park Geun-hye were right or wrong. However, what we want from you, President Moon, is that President Park Geun-hye should no longer remain in prison, and we request that you exercise your special rights for a presidential pardon and release her as soon as possible.
First, there’s the humanitarian reason.
President Park Geun-hye is elderly at 70 years of age, and has been medically treated [for her illnesses] numerous times [and had to return to prison while her pain remained constant] and she will continue to need medical care [for her illnesses].
In addition to restricting her physical freedom, neglecting her physical pain caused by the diseases [by keeping her imprisoned] is in reality a “torture” and is inhumane.
Second, it is to bring the citizens together.
President Moon’s term now has less than half a year left. We think it’s time to conclude the national divide caused by the impeachment of the president, which was an unprecedented situation. So why not be recorded in history as the “President of the People,” who achieved national unity, albeit late?
Third, it’s for the sake of the status of the Republic of Korea as a civilized county and the resulting status of our Korean compatriots living overseas.
A civilized state would be a country where justice by the rule of law is universally realized. In addition, we see that justice, particularly judicial justice, is completed when humane considerations are combined. In this sense, President Park’s release will be a measure of whether or not the Republic of Korea is a civilized country, and as a result, we overseas Koreans will receive corresponding treatment from the international community.
We wholeheartedly plead with you to pardon and release President Park Geun-hye before the year ends. Long live Republic of Korea! Long live Liberal Democracy! Thank you.

“박근혜대통령님의 사면석방을 탄원합니다!”

문재인대통령님,
미국을 비롯한 캐나다, 호주, 뉴질랜드 및 독일에 거주하는 저희 해외애국동포들은, 조국 대한민국이 참혹한 전쟁의 상흔과 대를 이어온 가난을 극복하고 산업화와 민주화 과정을 거쳐 마침내 세계 10대 경제대국으로 진입한 것에 대하여 무한한 자부심을 가지고 살고 있습니다.
이에 더하여, 미국 일본 등 선진 민주국가들조차 일찌기 가져보지 못한 여성대통령을 탄생시킨 일에 대하여 지난 일이지만 얼마나 큰 자부심을 가졌는지 모릅니다. 그러나 불행히도, 이 자부심의 원천이었던 여성대통령이 정치적으로 탄핵을 당하고 사법적으로 심판을 받게 되어 어언 5년 가까이 옥고를 치르고 있는 것을 볼 때, 동포로서의 자부심 추락은 물론 연약한 여성대통령 개인에 대한 안타까움에 가슴이 미어져 내립니다.
문재인대통령님,
우리는 이 시점에서 박근혜대통령님에 대한 탄핵 및 사법적 조치에 대하여 그 시비곡직을 묻고싶지 않습니다. 다만 우리가 문재인대통령님께 원하는 바는, 이제 박근혜대통령님을 더 이상 감옥에 두지 마시고 대통령이 가진 특별사면권을 행사하시어 조속히 그를 석방해 주시라는 것입니다.
첫째, 인도적 이유에서 입니다.
박근혜대통령님은 이제 70고령이며, 수차례 외부 입원치료를 받은 바 있고 또 앞으로도 받아야 할 처지입니다. 신체적 자유의 속박에 더하여 질병으로 인한 신체적 고통을 방치하는 것은 사실상 ‘고문’이나 다름 없는 비인도적 처사입니다.
둘째, 국민통합을 위해서 입니다.
문재인대통령님의 임기도 이제 반년 남짓을 남겨 두고 있습니다. 대통령 탄핵이라는 초유의 사태로 빚어진 국론분열을 추스려 마무리 해야 할 때라고 봅니다. 그리하여 늦게나마 국민통합을 이룬 ‘국민대통령’으로 역사에 기록되셔야 하지 않겠습니까?
셋째, 대한민국의 문명국으로서의 위상과, 그 결과로 초래될 저희 해외동포들의 위상을 위해서입니다.
문명국이란 법치에 의한 정의가 보편적으로 실현되는 그런 국가일 것입니다.
또한 정의 특히, 사법정의란 인도적 배려가 융합될 때 비로서 완성되는 것이라고 봅니다. 그런 의미에서 박근혜대통령님의 석방은 대한민국이 과연 문명국이냐의 여부를 가르는 척도가 될 것이며, 결과적으로 저희 해외동포들도 그에 상응하는 대우를 국제사회로부터 받게 될 것입니다.
부디 원하옵건대, 박근혜대통령님을 이 해가 저물기 전에 사면석방해 주시기를 간절히 바랍니다. 대한민국 만세! 자유민주주의 만세!
