From about noon on the 19th, all broadcasters broadcast the results of the inter-Korean summit in Pyongyang. However, in the ranking of portal sites during that time, ‘Puma Killing’ outperformed ‘Pyongyang Joint Declaration.’ On another portal site the other day, ‘Puma’ was searched more than 365,000 times while ‘Inter-Korean Summit’ was being searched 70,000 times. The killing of a puma that escaped (from its cell at) a zoo in Daejeon on the 18th had a major impact.

When the beast escaped from the urban zoo 3 km away from West Daejeon, the government mobilized police, firefighters and military units.  National Security Council (NSC) at the Blue House led the capture operation.  It is extremely unusual for an organization that handles North Korea’s nuclear test and major disasters to search for an animal.

Puma did not hurt any humans before it was killed, but the online opinions  did not praise the government’s quick response. Rather, “Why did you kill innocent cougar” was overwhelmingly posted.  Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon posted on his Facebook, “We wanted to capture the puma, but the judgment on the scene seems to have been different. I feels sorry and I’m sorry. “

This reaction continued on the next day, the 19th. There were hundreds of comments in the photos of the puma’s corpse. There were many memorabilia by uploading pictures of the life of the cougar.  A petition asking ‘Shut down the zoo nationwide’ was posted on the Blue House National Petition website and more than 30,000 people agreed.

Public criticism led to the issue of accountability.  An official of the Daejeon city said, “The final shoot order was ordered by the NSC of the Blue House.” A Blue House official said, “The killings were decided on the spot, not the Blue House.”
