The Seoul Foreign Correspondents’ Club expresses its grave concern over the ruling Democratic party’s statement singling out a Bloomberg reporter for her coverage of the President, which has resulted in serious threats to her personal safety.

It is disturbing for any politician to accuse any journalist of treason – a criminal offence – for reporting on matters of public interest or voicing an opinion. This is a form of censorship and journalistically chilling. Questions or complaints regarding an article should be raised with the publication in question rather than personally and publicly targeting a reporter.

South Korea underwent a long struggle to achieve full democracy and the SFCC calls on politicians on all sides to respect the right to freedom of expression and freedom of the press.

The accusations against the reporter remain on the Democratic party’s website, sustaining the threats against her, and should be taken down.

성명서

서울 외신기자클럽 이사회는 최근 더불어 민주당이 대통령에 대한 기사를 작성한 블룸버그 통신 기자 개인에 관련한 성명을 발표하고 이로 인해 기자 개인의 신변안전에 큰 위협이 가해진 것에 대해 우려를 표명하고자 한다.

어떠한 정치인이라도 대중의 관심사나 의견에 대해 보도한 기자 개인에 대해 “국가 원수를 모욕한 매국” 이라고 몰아 가는것은 매우 유감스러운 일이다. 이는 언론 통제의 한 형태이고 언론 자유에 찬물을 끼얹는 것이다. 기사와 관련된 의문이나 불만은 언론사에 공식적인 절차를 통해 제기되어야 하고 결코 한 개인을 공개적으로 겨냥 해서는 안된다.

대한민국은 완전한 민주주의를 이루기 위해 오랜 기간 투쟁을 해왔다. 서울외신기자클럽(SFCC)은 각 당의 정치인들에게 언론의 자유와 표현의 자유에 대한 권리를 존중할 것을 촉구한다.

기자를 비난하는 성명서가 현재도 더불어 민주당 홈페이지에 게시되어 있어 기자에 대한 위협이 지속되고 있으므로 즉시 철회 되어야 한다.
