Defectors from North Korea protest in Seoul against the government’s deportation of the escapees from North Korea who arrived in South Korea on November 12, 2019.

Ten North Korean defectors headed for South Korea were arrested by Vietnamese authorities and deported to China, it became known. North Korean escapees support groups argue that they have asked for help from South Korea’s foreign ministry, but the ministry has not taken any action.

In a telephone call with the Voice of America (VOA) on November 30, 2019, North Korean Justice Coalition Chairman Peter Chung said, “A total of 10 escapees in her/his teen, two males in their 20s and seven females in their 20s through 50s were arrested when they crossed the border from China to Vietnam.”  “There are 10 people who were arrested; additional four people, who are family members and broker(s), are in hiding.”

Chung said, “Vietnam border patrol soldiers have officially taken them to the border and  transferred them to the Liansgseon Border Protection Center on the Chinese side of the border…we don’t know what happened to them after that.”   Chung said he asked the South Korean Embassy in Vietnam for help, but the South Korean government had not taken any action.

Chung said, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs need to show their face at least once, but that was not done…they only said to wait, but didn’t go visit (them) or called even once.”  [truncated]
