South Korea’s Defense Ministry Considers Jointly Commemorating the Korean War with North Korea on the 70th Anniversary of North Korea’s Invasion of South Korea
2019-7-4, Chosun Ilbo
It was revealed on July 3, 2019 that the Ministry of National Defense (MND) is considering a joint commemoration with North Korea next year to mark the 70th anniversary of 6.25 [Korean War]. [South Korea refers to the Korean War as “6.25,” the day North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950]. Although North Korea insists [falsely] that the Korean war was caused by South Korea invading North Korea, the MND pursues a joint commemoration with North Korea to meet the current government’s [North Korea-friendly] policy trends. It is expected that there will be strong opposition and social controversy, especially given the 170,000 South Korean and UN troops killed and millions of displaced people [as a result of the Korean War began by Kim Il Sung].
