Retired Admiral Shim Dong-Bo received a guilty verdict and a fine for tearing down the sexually belittling nude painting of former president Park Geun-hye, which was “openly” displayed at the National Assembly in January 2017 during the height of the ‘impeachment political upheaval.’

“Dirty Dream” painting displayed at the South Korean National Assembly in January 2017

Judge Kim Young-a (김영아) of the Seoul District Court, on January 10, 2019, accepted the recommendation of the prosecutor and issued an order for a fine of 1,000,000 won ($884). Mr. A (60 years old) who accompanied retired admiral Shim was also fined 1,000,000 won.

The ‘Dirty Sleep’ painting grafted former president Park’s face on [Manet’s] ‘Olympia’ [and Giorgione’s “Sleeping Venus”] and drew it in a way that can be construed as Park sleeping naked while the Sewol Ferry was sinking on April 16, 2014. Painted were the former president Park’s father president Park Chung Hee in a unflattering doll-like figure, a miniature missile [meant as THAAD], and her dogs at the Blue House. In particular, Choi Soon-sil [Choi Seo-won], who is a key figure in the so-called ‘gukjeong nongdan’ [monopoly of state affairs] story, is standing nearby as if to inject her with illegal drugs instead of a flower bouquet, and Choi’s face is placed in the center of the Taegeukgi (South Korean flag). It is pointed out that the painting is full of intent to debase Park by eliciting the “Sewol Ferry 7 hours” images based on the false rumors that the former president Park was asleep after taking drugs during the Sewol Ferry sinking, or getting a beauty procedure, or having a secret love affair at a non-existing location. In a final statement on December 4, 2018, Admiral Shim said the “Dirty Sleep” [painting] on the exhibition at the National Assembly “is an incident about trampling on the character and authority of the commander-in-chief by displaying a nude picture of the unmarried female president in the lobby of the National Assembly, and damaging the national dignity of the proud advanced country of the Republic of Korea, and is women hating and discriminating. Additionally “What would anyone do if he saw a nude painting of his mother or wife or daughter hung in public places? I’m not sure if any family member would just walk by.”
